But there are some seemingly harmless things which you should avoid using your credit card for; things that ensure the lender makes as much money out of you as possible.
Withdrawing cash using a credit card: You may as well throw it down the drain. Credit cards typically carry a 2-3% interest charge on cash withdrawals, and unlike purchase interest, there isn't an interest-free period. The APR is usually much higher on these cards too. And the same goes for using credit card cheques; interest is applied straight away, and with a higher rate. Just use the card instead.
Overseas charges gained from using your credit card abroad can add almost 100 to the cost of a trip. Banks typically charge higher rates on purchases made abroad with a credit card. It's cheaper to just take cash instead, provided you keep it secure. A credit card should only be used abroad as a last resort.
Treating a credit card like a personal loan is a big mistake. Many people choose to use their large credit limit to pay for expensive items, and then pay off the credit card month by month. The problem with this is, unless you have an incredibly low APR, you could be paying double or even triple the interest you would on a regular loan for the same amount. Cheap loans are available with interest rates starting from 5.6%, whereas credit cards usually start from 12%.
If you only pay off the minimum payment each month, you could be adding hundreds of pounds to a debt on a credit card. Better to pay as much over the minimum as you can; you could save yourself a substantial amount of interest. Some credit cards offer a direct debit option to help you pay off the minimum balance, but you can pay over and above this amount any time you wish.
The most important thing to remember when applying for a credit card is; don't get greedy. Take the card with the lowest limit you can manage on, and if you even suspect you may struggle to pay it off, don't get the card. If you only use your card in emergencies, and pay off the full balance as soon as you can, you can avoid interest charges and unmanageable debt.
